Scale model of mansionLast Saturday it was a beautiful sunny day with temps in the high 30's so we took off for Fort Belvoir. We thought we would check out the base and do some shopping. It's only about 25 min. from our place. But when we got there .. we had forgotten to bring our latest insurance card and the truck must have a pass to get on base. So, we thought.. hmm.. isn't Mt. Vernon nearby? Well, not just nearby.. but less than 5 miles. So, we headed there and took the entire afternoon touring the grounds and the mansion. It is really special and we will return often. There is much to see and do, a great little period restaurant and Inn.
I was able to visit Mt. Vernon when I was in the 8th grade (with the 8th grade field trip to D.C.). It was such a cool experience. They were actually renovating the outside of the mansion, so in all my pictures, there is scaffolding on one side. But, it was still awesome to be able to see in person. I wish I could go back with you! :) I remember the grounds being beautiful!!
